The book
The Unquiet Graves guide book takes us through the beautiful countryside around Ieper (Ypres) and Poperinge in the Westhoek of Flanders to visit the places of execution and graves of men 'shot at dawn' by the British Army in the Great War.
The book is based on the researches of Piet Chielens and Julian Putkowski, both authorities on the subject, and tells the tragic stories of these men's executions, accompanied by eye-witness accounts and numerous photographs. The route begins at the award-winning In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper and can easily be followed by car or bicycle.
De route Rusteloze Graven voert door het mooie land van Ieper, Heuvelland en Poperinge in de Westhoek van Vlaanderen, naar de executieplaatsen en graven van de ge‘xecuteerden van het Britse leger in de Grote Oorlog.
Deze gids is gebaseerd op het onderzoek van Piet Chielens en Julian Putkowski. Zij vertellen over deze executies aan de hand van talrijke ooggetuigen, documenten en foto's. De route start bij het gelauwerde In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper en is zowel geschikt voor fietsers als voor auto's en bussen.
The authors
Piet Chielens was born and lives in Reningelst. He is co-ordinator of the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper and artistic director of Peaceconcerts Passendale. He is the author (in Dutch) of The Poproute, cycling behind the front, and co-author, with his brother Wim Chielens of The Comfort of Beauty, the Literary Salient.
Julian Putkowski is a researcher and university lecturer. He is the author, with Julian Sykes, of Shot at Dawn, the standard reference work about soldiers executed under the British Army Act in the First World War and British Army Mutineers 1914–1922.
Piet Chielens werd geboren en woont in Reningelst. Hij is cošrdinator van het In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper en artistiek directeur van Vredesconcerten Passendale. Hij schreef De Poproute, fietsen achter het front, en met zijn broer Wim Chielens, De Troost van Schoonheid, de literaire Salient.
Julian Putkowski is een historisch onderzoeker en universiteitsdocent in Londen. Hij schreef met Julian Sykes, Shot at Dawn, het standaardwerk over executies in het Britse leger. Hij is ook de auteur van British Army Mutineers 1914–1922.
